Houston -
Pablo Solares raced to a personal best in the 800 and Devon Fanfair had a lifetime best in the triple jump to lead Rice's men at the Texas Southern Triangular meet Saturday at Durley Field. Solares, running from the front most of the way, clocked 1:49.30 to win by almost five seconds and improve on the personal-best he set at the Bayou Classic two weeks ago.
Fanfair, taking advantage of favorable winds and near-perfect conditions, spanned 15.69 meters/51-5.75 with a 3.1 meters-per-second aiding wind to win the triple jump. His mark moves him into the NCAA national top-10 and improves on the regional-qualifying mark he turned in at the TSU Relays in March.
Other winners for the Owls included Charles Hampton, who took the 1500 in 4:02.7, and Omar Wright, who was the top collegian in the high jump with a 2.05/6-8.75 clearance. Brett Olson and David Axel finished second and third behind Hampton in the 1500.
Eric Spear was second in the 400-meter hurdles at 54.96, and Bahnsen Miller was third in the 400 at 49.51. Spear, Miller and Fanfair teamed up with Jason Powell to place second in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 42.62.
The Owls dropped the dual meet with Sam Houston 77-55, and lost to TSU 74-61.They return to action Friday at the Oregon Invitational in Eugene.
