Houston -
Omar Wright won the high jump and Pablo Solares romped home in the 800 meters to lead Rice's men on the final day of the 24th Annual Victor Lopez Bayou Classic Saturday at Rice's Track and Soccer Stadium.
"It is still early for us," said Rice head coach Jon Warren. "We had some good efforts, especially from Pablo and Omar, but we also saw some areas that we need to improve in over the next few weeks. We will see even better competition next weekend at the Texas Relays, so we need to focus on improving the things that didn't go so well this weekend."
Wright cleared 2.10 meters/6-10.75 for the victory, qualifying for the NCAA regional meet in May at Austin. The Cayman Islander, who holds his nation's record in the high jump, had the bar raised to 2.15/7-0.5 to set another national record, but was unsuccessful in three attempts.
Solares, who won the 1500 Friday night, moved to the front of the pack early in the 800 and sprinted to a 1:49.61 to win by almost two seconds and qualify for the NCAA regional meet.
In field events, Devon Fanfair won bronze in the triple jump with a leap of 14.38/47-2.25, and Jason Powell placed fifth at 14.14/46-4.75. Those two teamed up with Bahnsen Miller and Eric Spear to clock 42.37 and take fifth in the 4x100 relay.
Decathlete Tyler Whitham ran to a fifth-place finish in the 110 hurdles at 15.11 and added an eighth-place clearance in the pole vault at 4.60/15-1.
The Owls return to action at the Texas Relays next week, with the decathlon slated for Wednesday.
