
Powell, Fanfair Qualify for NCAA Regionals

Rice's Jason Powell and Devon Fanfair opened the outdoor track and field season with a 1-2 finish in the triple jump at the Texas Southern University Relays Saturday at Durley Field, picking up NCAA regional qualifying marks in the process.
Powell won the competition with a leap of 15.61 meters/51-2.75, while Fanfair had his best legal-wind jump as an Owl with a 15.08/49-5.75 effort. Powell's jump is the second best in the nation collegiately this season.
Senior Eric Spear lowered his personal best to 54.50 to place second in the 400-meter hurdles, improving on his previous best by almost half a second. In other field event action, high jumper Omar Wright cleared 2.05/6-8.75 to take sixth.
The Owls return to action Friday at Rice Track and Soccer Stadium in the Victor Lopez Bayou Classic.
