
Whitham Third in Pole Vault at TSU Relays

Tyler Whitham cleared 4.60 meters/15-1 in the pole vault to win bronze and lead the Rice men's track and field team on the first day of the Texas Southern University Relays Friday at Durley Field. Whitham, the silver medalist in the decathlon at the 2005 WAC championships, also clocked 49.95 in the prelims of the 400 meters.
In the other final with Rice interest, freshman Patrick O'Connor placed 10th in his first-ever hammer competition, throwing the 16-pound ball and chain 35.32/115-10.
Senior Eric Spear ran a lifetime-best 54.90 in the 400-meter hurdles to finish second in his heat and advance to Saturday's final, while Bahnsen Miller turned in a 49.92 to place third in his heat of the 400.
