Houston -
Jason Powell won the triple jump and Pablo Solares and Charles Hampton raced to gold on the track to lead the Rice men at the Leonard Hilton Memorial meet at Yeoman Fieldhouse Friday evening.
"We thought we would have some top-three finishes, so this is a good outing," said Rice head coach Jon Warren. "I am very pleased with the effort shown across the board in our first meet. When we are at full strength, we will be a solid squad."
Powell, a senior from Rotan, jumped 15.18/49-9.75 to win by more than a foot over Texas freshman Elliot O'Hare. Devon Fanfair grabbed fifth for the Owls with a 14.57/47-9.75 effort.
Hampton, a transfer from Texas, won his first track race in a Rice uniform, covering the 5000-meters in 14:57.98. Teammate David Axel was third at 15:09.62. In the 800, Solares won by almost two seconds over Kyle Miller of Texas, crossing the line at 1:51.79.
Senior Bahnsen Miller opened his season with a fourth-place effort in the 400, clocking 50.02.
In other field event action, Luke Stadel tossed the shot 15.91/52-2.5 to take fifth, and Tyler Whitham was ninth in the pole vault with a 4.60/15-1 clearance.
