COLLEGE STATION - Rice seniors Anna Reeve and Sarah Yoder teamed up to win the Texas A&M Women's Cross Country Opener Friday at College Station, covering the 12,000-meter relay course in 44:01. Each runner covered two legs of 3,000m, and the winning team was determined by the lowest cumulative time.
"Overall I was pleased with our effort," said Rice head coach Jim Bevan. "This was a very low-key outing for us and I thought Anna and Sarah performed really well. We are looking way down the road to our first Conference USA Championship meet and this was a good way to start the campaign."
Two other Rice duos also saw action - junior Brandi Armstrong and sophomore Susie Barrows, and junior Malin Fuglesang and sophomore Leah McKay.
The Owls were competing without all-conference performers Kate Gorry and Marisa Daniels, who will open their seasons later this month. Gorry was the WAC individual champion last year, and Daniels was an NCAA national qualifier, the first Rice freshman ever to qualify for the women's championships.
Rice is scheduled to return to College Station on Sept. 10 for the Texas A&M Invitational.
