Men's Tennis: Searle Knocked Out of NCAA Championships

COLLEGE STATION ? Rice junior Robert Searle lost to Virginia's Somdev Devvarman 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round of the 2005 NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championships on Wednesday in College Station.

Heading in to the match, Searle was ranked 41st by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association while Devvarman was ranked 30th. With the loss, the junior from Orpington, England finishes the 2004-05 season with a 21-9 record singles record. Searle was previously named the Western Athletic Conference player of the year after leading the Owls to a 13-8 regular season record with his 18-5 mark at number one singles.

The loss concludes the 2004-05 tennis season for the Owls, who finished the year with a 15-10 record, earned their fourth NCAA tournament bid in five years and are ranked 37th by the ITA.
