Men's Tennis: Owls Fall 5-2 at Texas

AUSTIN ? Despite a win at the number one singles position by Rice?s Robert Searle, the 33rd- ranked Owls fell 5-2 to number-39 Texas Friday night at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.

Searle, ranked 25th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, won his 16th match at the top singles spot. Searle defeated Travis Helgeson 6-3, 4-6, 7-6. The junior is now 16-3 on the season.

Rice?s other victory came at the number six slot. Newcomer Ralph Knupfer defeated Hubert Chodkiewicz in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to move to 11-6 on the season. Searle and Knupfer are the only two Owls to have double-digit wins.

Up next for Rice is a double-header on Sunday to close out the regular season at home. The Owls will host Southern Methodist at 1 pm at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium, followed by Abilene Christian at 6 pm. Rice will defend its Western Athletic Conference title next weekend in Honolulu, Haw.
