LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Rice tandem of sophomore Amy Halsey and freshman Carlyann Miller both recorded a pair of second place finishes in their respective events to pace the Owls' swim team in the second day of competition at the UNLV Winter Invitational Sunday evening in Las Vegas, Nev.
Miller finished second in the 200-yard freestyle among a field of 72 competitors with a season-best time of 1:51.51. The rookie from Fort Gibson, Okla., led a strong Rice showing in the event that included four Owls in the championship final. Sophomore Carey Hain was fourth (1:53.10) while senior Laura Healey was fifth (1:54.20) and Brittany Massengale was eighth (1:56.33).
Halsey took second out of 48 entrants in the 100-backstroke with a near career-best time of 57.54. Freshman Skylar Craig was fourth in the event to continue a big individual day. Swimming in her home state, the Reno native was also third in the 100-butterfly with a 57.80 in the finals.
The Owls also had three in the championship finals of the 400-individual medley. Sophomore Jennifer Hill was third with a season-best 4:29.17. Massengale was fifth (4:30.70) and Halsey seventh (4:32.58).
Both of the team's relays came through with solid finishes. After a fourth in the 200-medley (1:47.07), Rice touched in with a third (7:38.95) in the 800-freestyle.
The third and final day of the meet is slated for Monday at UNLV's Buchanen Natatorium. The Rice swim team will not be back in action until 2006.
