TEMPE, Ariz. - Rice sophomore Brittany Massengale posted a pair of individual victories and the Owl swimmers won six-of-10 races on the day overall, but it was not enough to overcome Pac-10 power Arizona State as the Sun Devils slipped away with a 109-96 dual meet win Friday afternoon on the road in Tempe, Ariz.
With the score tied 94-94 heading into the 400-yard medley relay to close out the competition, Arizona State recorded a 1-2 finish ahead of Rice for a 15-2 point total in that event. The relay lifted ASU to a 13-point margin of victory after Rice had won six of nine events with some of the team's best times of the year.
Massengale picked up right were she left off prior to the New Year's break, winning both the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle events in the team's first meet action since mid-December. After taking the 500 with a time of 4:54.14, the standout from Alma, Ark., came back and won the 1,000 with a mark of 10:07.98.
The sophomore tandem of Jennifer Hill and Amy Halsey led a 1-2 Rice finish, respectively, in the 200-individual medley. Hill won with a 2:06.82 and Halsey registered a season-best 2:07.25. Freshmen sprinters Diane Gu and Carlyann Miller also won individual events at the Plummer Aquatic Center on the ASU campus. Gu claimed the 100-free (51.22) and she also recorded the fifth-fastest time in Rice history with a second place in the 50 (23.40). Miller won the 200-free (1:51.98) and she teamed with Gu, freshman Skylar Craig and senior Laura Healey for a victory in the 200-free relay with the Owls' best time of the season (1:34.93).
Freshman Natalie Kirchhoff registered a career-best 2:08.52 to take second in the 200-butterfly. Halsey was Rice's top finisher in the 200-backstroke with a second place 2:04.28.
The Rice swimmers fell to 3-2 in dual meet action. The Owls' road swing continues through the weekend with a dual meet against former Western Athletic Conference foe Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Jan. 9. Start time is slated for 4 pm central time.
