TULSA, Okla. - The Rice volleyball team lost a 30-19, 34-32, 30-23 decision to Tulsa in Conference USA action on Sunday afternoon in Tulsa.
Junior Tessa Kuykendall led the Owls with 11 kills, while senior Olaya Pazo and freshman Karyn Morgan added 10 each. Pazo and Morgan also finished with double-doubles, posting 11 and 10 digs, respectively. Sophomore Yvette Kirk led Rice with 14 digs in the match.
After four ties to start game one, the Golden Hurricane posted a 4-0 run to grab the momentum. The teams traded points again, then Tulsa scored another 4-0 to take control of the game.
The battle tightened up in game two. With the Owls holding a 5-4 lead, the Hurricane ran off five-straight points to take the early advantage. Rice answered back immediately with a 4-0 run to knot the score at 10. Tulsa looked to regain the momentum, slowly pulling ahead for a 20-16 lead. Again the Owls fought back to take a slight lead, but then neither team could gain the upper hand with eight of the games 14 ties down the stretch. Rice fended off three game points, but Tulsa held on for the lead and the win.
The score remained close in the early going of game three, with nine early ties. With the score knotted at 10 each, Tulsa scored three straight to take the lead for good.
The loss drops Rice's record to 16-9 overall and 7-7 in C-USA. The Owls make their final regular-season home appearance on Thursday when they host Houston at 7 pm.
