Seventh-Ranked Notre Dame Sweeps Rice

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Rice volleyball team lost to seventh-ranked Notre Dame 30-20, 30-20, 30-13 on Friday in South Bend, Ind., at the Irish Thanksgiving Invitational.
Freshman Karyn Morgan led the Owls with 13 kills, while senior Olaya Pazo added 10. Defensively, freshman Jessica Holderness recorded 12 digs, and sophomore Rachel Lopez had 10.
The Owls struck first in game one with a kill from junior Tessa Kuykendall. After trading points for four early ties, the Irish took the lead at 5-4 and never trailed again. Rice didn't give up though, trailing by just three before Notre Dame mounted an 8-1 run to close out the frame.
The Irish jumped out to a 6-1 lead to open game two, but the Owls fought back and closed the gap to two points twice. Notre Dame then proved their ranking with an 8-0 run to take control of the game.
Rice started strong again in game three, trading blows with Notre Dame to open play. The Irish broke a 3-3 tie with consecutive blocks to take the lead and the momentum as they went on to win.
The loss drops the Owls' record to 17-11 overall, while the Irish improve to 28-2. Rice closes out the 2005 campaign Saturday at 3:30 pm (CST) against ninth-ranked Louisville at the Joyce Center on the Notre Dame campus.
