Owls Finish Season With Loss to Ninth-Ranked Cardinals

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Rice wrapped up the 2005 season on Saturday against ninth-ranked Louisville, falling 30-16, 30-15, 30-18 at the Irish Thanksgiving Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
Senior Kristina Hoban and freshman Karyn Morgan paced the Owls' offense with nine kills each, while Morgan also had a team-best 12 digs. Freshman Jessica May added a career-high 10 digs.
The Owls and the Cardinals traded kills to open the match as the score was tied six times in the early going. With the score knotted at six each, Louisville scored three-straight points to start pulling away from Rice as the Cardinals went on for the win.
In game two, Louisville jumped out to a 4-1 lead before Rice scrapped back to tie the score at five all. The Cardinals answered right back with a 5-0 run to take control of the frame.
It was a similar story in game three, as Louisville opened strong but Rice stayed close early. With the Owls trailing 19-16, the ninth-ranked Cardinals posted an 11-2 run to lock up the win.
With the loss, Rice finishes the season 17-12, while Louisville improves to 29-2. The young Owls, which featured three freshmen in tonight's starting lineup, lose just two seniors from the 2005 squad and will return five of tonight's starters plus the libero in 2006.
