Seattle, Wash. -
Lauren Neaves scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds and Krystal Frazier hit four key free throws in the final 24 seconds to lead Rice past Penn 59-54 in the opening game of the Husky Classic Saturday at the University of Washington.
With the win, Rice moves to 2-1 on the year, while Penn falls to 1-2. The Owls will face Washington in Sunday's championship game at 5 pm (CST).
In a sloppy game that saw both teams shoot below 40 percent from the field, the Owls held Penn without a score for the first 5:46 of the contest. Rice led 27-21 at the half behind Kadie Riverin's nine points, but the Quakers drew within two on a Joey Rhoads lay-up with 17:38 to go in the game.
Frazier, who was 0-6 from the field in the first half, hit a three-pointer from the right side to put Rice back up by five, and the Owls stretched the lead to 10 on a Neaves field goal with 9:01 left.
Penn battled back and cut the lead to one on a Monica Naltner trey with 4:11 remaining, but Neaves hit a pair of shots to keep Rice in the lead before Frazier nailed her four charity shots to ice the win.
Riverin finished with 13 points and four assists. Naltner led all scorers with 19, and Penn's Jennifer Fleischer had a game-high 11 rebounds.
