Seattle, Wash. -
Krystal Frazier scored 13 points and Lauren Neaves added 10 points and seven rebounds, but Rice couldn't overcome an ice-cold shooting night and an aggressive Washington team as the Huskies raced to an 86-62 win in the championship game of the 19th Husky Classic Sunday.
Rice shot only 33.3 percent from the field, hitting 20 of 60, and connected on only 58.8 percent of their 34 free throws. Washington shot 46.4 percent from the field and hit seven three-pointers as the Huskies moved to 5-0. Rice drops to 2-2 on the season.
"Washington came out really aggressive and they were ready to play against our offense," said Rice head coach Greg Williams. "Their size definitely hurt us across the board, but we simply couldn't make the shots and our free throws and that will cost you against a team as good as Washington."
Washington burst to an 11-point lead on a trey by Kayla Burt with 11:54 to go in the first half before the Owls whittled away at the lead, cutting it to three on a pair of Catherine DuPont free throws with 8:30 to go. The Huskies built up another lead after that, stretching it to 13 on a Breanne Watson lay-in with 5:28 left in the half. Frazier hit three field goals and two free throws to draw the Owls within nine at the half, as Washington took a 34-25 lead into the locker-room.
The second half started with traded lay-ups until Cameo Hicks hit two free throws for the Huskies to put them up by 13 with 15:38 to go in the game. From that point Washington pulled away behind three three-pointers from Burt and the hosts opened up a 24-point gap with 6:47 to go. Heidi McNeil gave the Huskies their biggest lead of the night at 80-52 with a lay-up with 1:50 remaining, and Washington finished up with an Erica Schelly lay-up at the buzzer for the win.
Neaves was named to the all-tournament team along with Washington's Cameo Hicks and Emily Florence, as well as Penn's Jennifer Fleischer and San Diego's Tiara Harris. Andrea Plouffe, the high scorer with 17 and high rebounder with 10 in the championship game, was named tourney MVP for the Huskies.
Rice returns to action Friday, facing Davidson in the first round of the Gene Hackerman Invitational at Autry Court.
