
Owls Third at NCAA Regional Cross Country Meet

Sophomore Marissa Daniels was third and Conference USA runner-up Kate Gorry was sixth to lead Rice to a third-place finish at the NCAA South Central regional cross country championships Saturday.
Daniels clocked 20:56.45 for the six-kilometer distance, with Gorry crossing the line at 21:10.10. Callie Wells, who was third at the C-USA meet, was 16th at 21:53.40. The Owls scored 78 points to finish behind Arkansas (45) and Baylor (46).
"Marissa and Kate ran very impressive races," said Rice head coach Jim Bevan. "It was hot and breezy today and that made for challenging conditions, but the team ran quite well."
The team will learn Sunday if it has been invited to the NCAA championships at Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 21. Daniels, who qualified for nationals last year as a freshman, and Gorry will advance as individuals if the Owls do not go as a team.
Baylor took the top two individual spots with Brittany Brockman winning in 20:47.20 and Erin Bedell second at 20:49.80.
Other top finishers for Rice were Sarah Yoder, 25th at 22:34.25, Lea Garcia, 28th at 22:44.35, Laura Kelley, 37th at 23:00.60, and Anna Reeve, 44th at 23:19.25.
