Last year's WAC cross country champion, Kate Gorry, and 2004 NCAA national qualifier Marissa Daniels will try to lead 24th-ranked Rice to the school's first Conference USA team title in any sport Saturday at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.
Gorry won individual gold in the school's final WAC competition last year and paced the Owls to a second-place team finish behind SMU. Daniels was fifth in the WAC meet as a freshman in '04, and placed 53rd at the NCAA championships.
"We are really excited about our first Conference USA championship meet," said Rice head coach Jim Bevan. "We know the teams that came to the league from the WAC with us, and it will be good to go up against old rivals like Houston again."
Besides Gorry and Daniels, the Owls will have sophomore Callie Wells, who has been the team's number-three runner and was 58th at the Pre-Nationals meet on Oct. 15, as well as seniors Anna Reeve and Sarah Yoder.
The Owls moved up to number-24 in the latest FinishLynx national poll, the only C-USA team with a national top-30 ranking.
Saturday's five-kilometer race is scheduled for 9:45 am ET. Tulane was originally scheduled to host the meet in New Orleans, but the event was moved to Orlando after Hurricane Katrina. Full meet results will be available at www.conferenceusa.com and www.ucfsports.com following Saturday's meet.
