Football: Fifth-Ranked Texas Stops Owls' Winning Streak, 35-13

AUSTIN -- Cedric Benson ran roughshod through the nation's stingiest rushing defense and Vince Young threw for three touchdowns to lead fifth-ranked Texas to a 35-13 victory over Rice, stopping the Owls' five-game winning streak.

Benson rushed for 189 yards and a TD on 20 carries to spark a Texas rushing attack that picked up 339 yards against an Owl rush defense that was yielding just 7.5 yards on the ground entering the game.

Texas (3-0) struck first just under three minutes into the contest when Young hit Bo Scaife with a 10-yard TD pass. After a 39-yard field goal by Rice's Brennan Landry, Benson scored on a two-yard run with just over four minutes left in the quarter. David Thomas then caught a 22-yard TD pass from Young three minutes later to give the Longhorns a 21-3 lead.

Benson, who picked up 169 of his yards in the first half, was quick to credit the offensive line for Texas' quick start.

"The O-line is really where it all starts," he said. "They put it together and got the job done. They opened up a lot of holes for me tonight."

Young, who completed 11-of-18 passes for 161 yards, opened the second-half scoring with a 49-yard TD pass to Thomas to extend the Longhorn lead to 35-6.

Rice (2-1) was unable to generate much offense, scoring on a pair of field goals by Landry. The Owls gained 228 yards of offense, only 56 through the air.

The Owls scored their only touchdown with 2:21 left in the game on a 44-yard run by freshman quarterback Joel Armstrong, seeing his first action of his Rice career.
