Football: Syptak Leads Three Owls On All-WAC Squad

HOUSTON ? Junior defensive end John Syptak leads three Rice players on the all-Western Athletic Conference football squad announced Tuesday.

Syptak (Bellville/High) is the only Owl on the first team as determined by voting by league coaches. Offensive tackle Scott Mayhew (Nederland/High) and rover Terry Holley (Oklahoma City, Okla./Southwest), both seniors, earned second-team berths.

Syptak is among ther WAC leaders with eight sacks this season and 15 tackles for losses. He had 69 total tackles on the season, including a season-high 10 at UTEP.

Mayhew has been an anchor of the Rice rushing offense which leads the nation with 306.5 yards per game, while Holley's three interceptions were the best on the Owl squad in 2004.

Other Owls also receiving votes were offensive lineman Greg Wilson (Sr., Houston/Westbury), fullback Ed Bailey (Sr., Klein/High), defensive lineman Jeremy Calahan (Sr., Pflugerville/High), and linebacker Adam Herrin (Jr., Celina/High)

WAC champion Boise State led the selections with six first-team picks and coach of the year Dan Hawkins. Louisiana Tech running back Ryan Moats was named the league's offensive player of the year and UTEP linebacker Robert Rodriguez was the top defender.

Rice finished its final WAC season with a 3-8 record, 2-6 in league play. The Owls move to Conference USA in 2005.
