Cross Country: Hewamudalige, Daniels Shine at NCAA Championships

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rice junior Marcel Hewamudalige finished 40th and freshman Marissa Daniels placed 53rd at the 2004 NCAA Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships to lead the Owls in Terre Haute, Ind., on Monday.

Hewamudalige, who won the 2004 Western Athletic Conference individual crown last month, completed the 10K course in 31:52.9. His national finish was the best by an Owl since 1987 when Tony Martinez placed 37th.

Junior Scott Loftin placed 133rd out of the 242 finishers with his time of 32:55.4, while sophomore Stephen Magness finished 162nd in 33:15.4.

Wisconsin's Simon Bairu won the men's individual title with the time of 30:37.7.

In the women's race, Daniels' 53rd-place finish matched Kate Gorry's from a year ago as the best Owl showing in the national women's race since Candace Lessmeister placed 42nd in 1993. Daniels, who earned all-WAC first-team honors in October, completed the 6K course in 21:24.4.

Kim Smith of Providence dominated the field of 250 with the winning time of 20:08.5, 18 seconds ahead of second place.

The meet concludes the 2004 cross country season. The Owls now set their sites on track and field, with the indoor season beginning in January.
