EUGENE, Ore. - Adam Davis and Alice Falaiye garner all-American status with their top finishes at the NCAA outdoor track and field championships, while Ryan Harlan notches a top 15 finish in the decathlon, at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Davis, a freshman from Spring (Klein), ran 1:48.50 in the 800 meters, and was one of the top eight American finishers, to earn him the all-American honors for the second time this year. Davis finished seventh at the NCAA indoor championships in March to add indoor all-American status to his resume.
Long jumper Falaiye, a solid jumper since she stepped foot on the Rice campus, walked away with a second place finish. The sophomore posted a leap of 21-01 1/4, five inches shorter than the champion, Brianna Glenn of Arizona. Falaiye owns the conference record with a leap of 21-04 3/4.
Harlan, the 2000 junior national decathlon champion, set a new school record with 7,319 points two weeks ago at the WAC championships. The sophomore accumulated 7,222 in Eugene, in an 11th place finish.
In other action, sophomore Tommy Oleksy finished ninth in the men's long jump with a leap of 25-03 1/4. He qualified for the NCAA championships with a season best mark of 25-10 3/4.
Allison Beckford, a freshman from Jamaica, was the top qualifier in both the 400 meters and the 400 meter hurdles. Her time of 51.50 in the 400 meters was a new school record, and two tenths of a second better than the next qualifier. Beckford will run the finals of the 400 meter hurdles on Friday, looking to better her qualifying mark of 56.39. The 400 meter finals will be on Saturday.
The women's 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay teams failed to qualify for the finals. Competition resumes at 5 pm (CDT) on Friday and runs through Saturday evening.
