Track and Field: Rice Men, Women Take Bayou Classic Title

HOUSTON - The Rice men's and women's track and field teams claimed the title at the 19th annual Rice Bayou Classic Saturday at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium.
The Kingwood Mustangs swept the high school competition, winning the girls and boys titles. The Kingwood girls tallied 86 points, while the boys collected 108.50. Hastings high school girls captured titles in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. The North Shore high school boys ran away with the 4x100 and 4x400 relay titles.
At the university level, the Rice women dominated the competition, tallying 221 points, to Harvard's 110. The Owls captured several first place finishes, including LaKeisha Robertson in the 100 meters with a time of 11.89; Keitha Moseley in the 200 meters in a time of 24.32; Tanya Wright in the 800 meters with a time of 2:09.01; Allison Beckford in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 56.58; Alice Falaiye in the long jump with a leap of 19-05 1/2; and Jessica Sommerfeld in the shot put with a throw of 47-10. The Owls went an impressive 1-2-3-4 in the 1,500, led by Erin Brand's time of 4:35.72. Elizabeth Ruckman, Aimee Teteris and Shannon Murto followed, in second, third and fourth, respectively. Rice's 4x400 meter relay team of Kelechi Anderson, Robertson, Teteris and Beckford took the title with a time of 3:38.36.
The Rice men slipped by Texas-San Antonio, winning the competition by five points, 150-145. Harvard tallied 102 total points, and Stephen F. Austin finished with 99. Adam Davis took the title in the 1,500 meters in a time of 3:52.19, while Rashad Stafford dominated the hurdles. Stafford won the 110 meter hurdles in a time of 14.41, and took the 400 meter hurdle title with a time of 52.58. The Owls 4x400 relay squad of Stafford, Daniel Pessing, Jeff Jorgensen and Davis won the race in a time of 3:12.27. Rice took 2-3 in the high jump, with Reed Ballis and Tommy Oleksy both clearing the bar at 6-08. Oleksy also claimed the long jump title with a leap of 23-11 1/2.
Next up for the Owls is the Clyde Little Texas Relays. Rice heads to Austin for the 74th running of the Texas Relays Wednesday through Saturday, April 4-7, at the Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field located on the campus of the University of Texas.
