Track and Field: Mays, Walwyn Win Long Jump Titles

Mays, a senior from Roby (High), won the long jump with a personal best leap of 19-04 3/4. Walwyn, a sophomore from Houston (South Houston), was the top university long jump finisher with a jump of 24-07 1/4.
In the women's pole vault, freshman Elizabeth Hinshaw took second with a mark of 11-01 3/4. The Owls Shannon Murto, competing in her first race since the cross country season, finished third in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:42.37. Summer Bell finished seventh, Bonnie Bryan crossed the line ninth, and Amanda Felder came in 11th.
On the men's side, senior Rashad Stafford took second in the 110 meter hurdles, after taking third in the 400 meter hurdles on Friday. The DeSoto (High) native completed the 110 hurdles in a time of 14.19. In the men's 1,500 meter run, Rice's Daniel Pessing claimed third-place with a time of 4:04.98. Corbett Redding finished in tenth with a time of 4:28.70. The men's 4x100 relay team came in second in a time of 41.24, while the 4x800 relay squad took the title in a time of 7:40.80. Ryan Harlan cleared the high jump bar at 6-08 1/4, and also placed fourth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.42.
The Owls return to the track next weekend when they host the Bayou Classic/Meeting of the Minds at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium.
