Women's Tennis: Rice Falls To UTEP, 5-2

UTEP swept the doubles matches to earn the first point of the day. Ana Brnas and Jana Perkova downed Jeri Gonzales and Yasmin Fisher at number one, 8-3, while Kendall Exelby and Elizabeth Stone fought past Erin Waters and Judith Hagedorn at number two, 8-6. Natalie Briaud and Karen Chao lost to Elisa Bjorklund and Callie Dand at number three, 8-6.
After moving indoors, the Miners took the first four singles matches to clinch the victory. Waters was unable to play her number one singles match against Perkova due to a knee injury, giving UTEP a 2-0 advantage.
Brnas took care of Hagedorn at number two, 6-3, 6-4, while Natalie Briaud lost a nail-biter to Stone, 7-6, 7-6. At number four, Dand cruised past Gonzales, 6-2, 6-4. Fisher got the Owls on the board with a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Exelby at number five, and Chao outlasted Bjorklund at number six, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.
The loss drops the Owls to 6-6 for the season, and they will return to action when they host North Texas Sunday at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium at 10 a.m.
