Women's Tennis: Marshall Downs Rice, 5-2

At number three doubles, Rice's Judith Hagedorn and Erin Waters routed Marshall's Meghan Skalsy and Sheela Cabiling, 8-0, but Natalie Briaud and Karen Chao fell to Vicky Lee and Alice Sukner, 8-2, at number two. At number one, Yasmin Fisher and Jeri Gonzales had their serve broken late, and Anna Mitina and Ana Ceretto claimed a 9-7 victory to earn the doubles point for the Thundering Herd.
Marshall then claimed the first three singles matches to finish to clinch the victory. Mitina cruised past Waters, 6-2, 6-1, at number one, while Ceretto fought past Judith Hagedorn, 7-5, 6-3, at number two. Briaud lost at number three to Sukner, 6-0, 6-2.
The Owls got on the board when Gonzales outlasted Lee at number four, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, and Karen Chao overcame Skalsky at number six, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5. At number five, Fisher lost both sets in tiebreakers to Cabiling, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4).
The Owls are now 6-5 for the season and will return to action when they host Western Athletic Conference rival Texas-El Paso Sunday at 11 a.m. at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
