HOUSTON - Despite junior Judith Hagedorn and freshman Annie Goodrich each posting 7-5, 6-4 wins in singles, the Rice women were edged by Houston 4-3 Friday at Chancellor's Recreation Center.
Hagedorn defeated Karine Urbin at number two, while Goodrich downed Jen Baccarani at number four. Senior Erin Waters had a fierce battle with Sarah Borwell at number one singles, but Borwell was able to rally for a 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 win.
Hagedorn and freshman Karen Chao teamed for Rice's only victory in doubles, downing Baccarani and Kailey Meisinger 8-6 at number three. The Cougars grabbed wins at the one and two positions to claim the doubles point.
Friday's match was moved indoors due to inclement weather in the Houston area.
The Owls return to action Saturday, hosting BYU at the Rice Kinesiology Courts at 11 am.
