Women's Tennis: Day Two Completed at Rice Tennis Classic

An all TCU final in the singles bracket was not to be as Perez defeated teammate Katrin Gaber, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6, but the Horned Frogs' Pierce lost to UTEP's Jana Perkova, 6-3, 6-3. Perez will face Perkova on Sunday in the 9 a.m. match.
Rice's Jeri Gonzales fought past Auburn-Montgomery's Belen Berbel, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (6), 6-3, in the Flight B singles bracket. Gonzales will take on UTEP's Ana Brnas, who defeated TCU's Karolina Roubickova, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0. In the consolation bracket, the Owls' Yasmin Fisher defeated UTEP's Dione Gonzales, 6-2, 6-4, to set up a final with TCU's Sandhya Kanury, who defeated Rice's Natalie Briaud, 6-2, 6-4.
The Owls won three out of their four matches in the Flight C singles round robin. Karen Chao won both of her matches against UTEP opponents Adriana Boykova and Elisa Bjorklund. Kylie Wallis topped TCU's Renee Pinkenburge, but fell to the Horned Frogs' Emily Waters.
In the Flight A doubles, Auburn-Montgomery's Ximgna Rodriguez and Juliana Piumatti remained undefeated with an 8-6 win over Rice's Natalie Briaud and Karen Chao and an 8-3 win over UTEP's Jana Perkova and Callie Dand. Perez and Pierce also remained unblemished with wins over Luca Somorjai of Auburn-Montgomery and Stephanie Moat of Rice, 8-3, and over Briaud and Chao, 8-4.
In Flight B doubles, Auburn-Montgomery's Berbel and Electra Henry recorded a pair of victories over UTEP's Brnas and Kendall Exelby and Rice's Annie Goodrich and Wallis.
Rice's Jeri Gonzales and Judith Hagedorn remained undefeated with wins over UTEP's Bjorklund and Boykova, 8-1, and TCU's Pinkenburge and Waters, 8-2.
The tournament concludes Sunday with matches beginning at 9 a.m.
