The scholarship is presented annually to 12 of the nation's top scholar-athletes to assist with postgraduate studies in the area of sports administration or a related field in intercollegiate athletics.
Mensa, a native of Bronx, N.Y., is the first Rice athlete to ever receive this award. He is a member of the men's track and field team where he competes in the 100-meter dash and 4x100-meter relay. He will graduate on May 13 with a bachelor of arts in kinesiology. He has accrued a 3.41 grade-point average and been accepted into the kinesiology program at the University of Texas-Austin to begin work on his master's degree in the fall.
Mensa, who was a highly recruited high school sprinter, aspires to become a strength and conditioning coach after a series of injuries hampered his college athletics career.
Mensa received the Arthur Ashe Minority Excellence award in 1999 and was named to the Western Athletic Conference's scholar-athlete and academic all-conference teams. He was also recognized by Rice as an honor athlete.
