Track & Field: Harlan Eighth in Decathlon at Texas Relays

Harlan's two-day total of 6,891 points is the second best performance in Rice history and was just 139 off the school record of 7,030 set by Eric Dorn May 14-15, 1988. Harlan finished fifth among collegians in the event. Ricky Barker of Aisics won the event with 7,903 points.
Also competing for the Rice men, newcomers Frank Miller and Kevin Bowen each finished sixth in their respective heats in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles. Bowen finished in 55.12, while Miller posted a 57.16.
In women's action, sophomore Liza Ruckman finished seventh in the 3,000 meters with the time of 10:05.07. Baylor's Karin Ernstrom won the event in 9:44.55. The Owls' Summer Bell, a freshman, was eighth in the 10,000 meters, posting the time of 39:59.62. The event was won by Araceli Davila of Oklahoma State with the time of 38:00.33.
The Texas Relays continue all day Friday and conclude Saturday.
