Women's Tennis: Owls Sweep Northwestern State 9-0

The Owls' captured all six singles wins in straight sets as number one Elle Lewis set the pace by knocking out Jelena Lukic 6-0, 6-0. Number four Stephanie Moat and number six Natalie Briaud continued the trend, disposing their opponents 6-1, 6-0, and 6-0, 6-1, respectively. The closest singles matches of the day came at the two and three positions, as Erin Waters handed Northwestern State's Brandi Mathews a 6-3, 6-4 loss at the second seed, and Judith Hagedorn topped Katy Wallace 6-4, 6-3 in the third spot. Jeri Gonzalessealed the sweep for the Owls, defeating number five Brandee Lasyzzo 6-1, 6-3.
In doubles action, the Rice duo of Kylie Wallis and Waters grabbed the quickest win, taking down Natalie Unger and Kathryn Olsen, 8-2. The other two teams had to fight a bit harder to keep the Owl shutout intact, as Lewis and Hagedorn and Gonzales and Briaud each won their bouts 8-6.
The Owls improve to 1-2 on the season and will hit the courts next in El Paso when they travel to take on the Miners Friday.
