Women's Tennis: Rice Tennis Classic Concludes

After taking the first set then faltering in the second, Perez stormed back for a 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 victory over the Miners' Jana Perkova to win her flight. In flight B singles, Brnas fought off the Owls' Jeri Gonzales for a 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 win and the championship. Rice freshman Karen Chao defeated the Horned Frogs' Emily Waters 6-1, 6-2 to preserve her perfect record in the tournament and claim the round-robin, flight C singles title. Chao finished the tournament without dropping a single set.
In doubles action, the Rice duo of Gonzales and Judith Hagedorn rallied for an 8-6 win against TCU's Brenna Shackelford and Paty Aburto to keep their tournament record unblemished at 4-0 and win the round-robin, C flight.
Auburn-Montgomery won the round-robin, flights A and B doubles. Ximgna Rodriguez and Juliana Piumatti finished with a 4-0 record in the A flight, while Belen Berbel and Electra Henry compiled a 4-1 ledger in the B flight. Neither team played on Sunday.
The Rice women return to action on Oct. 13 when they travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the Wake Forest Fall Invitational.
