Sean Anderson is in his second year at Rice as the Owls' Recruiting Coordinator and offensive assistant.
He joined the Owls in 2022 after amassing 17 years of coaching experience on the offensive side of the ball. He was named to Football Scoop’s Minority Coach Watch List in the spring 2022
Anderson came to Rice after three seasons at Alabama State where he coached the Hornets wide receivers. In the spring 2020 season, the Hornets recorded 1,011 yards through the air with six different receivers catching passes in just five games. During his first season with the Hornets (2019), Anderson led the receiving corps to 144 receptions (out of 203 total for the team). He also coached Michael Jefferson who finished with 49 receptions for 767 yards and 12 touchdowns, while Jahod Booker and Tyrek Allen each had 29 receptions.
He coached at Mississippi Valley State from 2014-2019, originally coaching the wide receivers before switching to quarterbacks in 2017 and then tight ends and coordinating special teams in 2018.
In 2018, he coached the No. 2 punt return team in the country, and his kickoff return team was ranked 24th. Booker Chambers, who amassed 1,662 all-purpose yards to rank ninth in the nation, earned All-American honors under Anderson.
In 2017 Anderson’s quarterbacks broke three different MVSU passing records. Freshman Christopher Fowler Jr. finished fifth in pass efficiency and fifth in passing yards per game. Booker T. Chambers was named the 2015 SWAC Freshman of the Year and earned SWAC second-team honors as a returner. MVSU wide receiver Julian Stafford became the fifth player in school history to reach the 1,000-yard receiving mark in 2015 and led the SWAC in receiving yards per game and receptions per game. He was a first-team, All-SWAC selection, a nominee for the Conerly Trophy, a Boxtorow All-American, and named the Most Valuable Senior by the Jackson Touchdown Club.
Prior to his time at MVSU, Anderson spent one season as offensive coordinator at Benedict College in South Carolina. While at Benedict, his offense ranked fourth in the conference in passing and two of his wide receivers finished in the top 10 in receiving. He coached the wide receivers at Campbellsville for one season and coached a pair of all-conference wide receivers, including Demytreus Gipson who set the school record with a 97-yard touchdown reception.
Prior to Campbellsville, Anderson coached one year at Northwestern State University in Louisiana, where he coached wide receivers. He coached a wide receiver who amassed 908 yards of total offense and is a record holder in kickoff return yardage.
He spent four years at Lincoln University in Missouri, where he served as passing game coordinator, producing four all-conference players. During his tenure, he coached a receiver to more than 900 yards of total offense in three of his five seasons as a full-time coach. While at Lincoln, Anderson coached eight All-Conference academic performers as well as four All-Conference student-athletes. In 2007, Anderson coached a wide receiver who amassed 969 yards of total offense. In 2008, he coached a wide receiver who reached 1,057 of total yards of offense.
Anderson coached for three seasons at Jackson State University. While at JSU, he served as tight end, wide receiver, offensive line, and quarterback coach. In 2006, JSU’s scoring offense ranked 19th in the nation and first in the SWAC. He coached former JSU standouts, Chris Jones, Cletis Gordon and Jaymar Johnson, whom all played in the NFL.
A native of St. Louis, Anderson earned his mass communications degree from William Jewell College in 2004 after transferring from Central Missouri State University following the 2000 season. While at William Jewell, he was a two-sport athlete, starting three years at wide receiver and lettering two years in track and field.
His wife’s name is Kenya and he has three sons, Keelin, Chandler, and Croix> He is a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
