Joe Ashfield is in his second season as the Owls offensive line coach.
In his initial campaign on South Main, Ashfield saw eight players make starts, anchored by senior Sam Pierce and redshirt freshman Shea Baker, who each started in all 13 games and earned postseason honors from league coaches. Six players made their first starts in 2018, including three true freshmen and five of six return this fall where they will be joined by three graduate transfers.
He came to Rice after five seasons as an offensive assistant at Stanford where he assisted with practice coverage, charting plays, statistical analysis and preparing opponent scouting reports for the offensive staff.
Prior to joining the Cardinal in 2013, Ashfield served as the offensive coordinator at New Mexico Military Institute for two years and coached receivers at Loras College (Iowa) from 2008-10.
Ashfield played quarterback at St. John's (Minn.) under legendary coach John Gagliardi and then played professionally for one year in the German Football League (2001) before beginning his coaching career in New Zealand with the North Harbour Pride in Auckland from 2001-2004. He served as the head coach of the New Zealand National Team in 2004.
He returned to the United States in 2005, earning a master's degree from Delta State and worked as an offensive assistant at Stanford from 2005 and as a graduate assistant in 2006.
Ashfield and wife, Susan, make their home in Houston.
