Houston native Andrew Waters joined the Owls in January of 2024 as the Director of Recruiting and Player Development.

Waters comes to Rice from Trinity University in San Antonio where he served as the assistant baseball coach and recruiting coordinator for his alma mater for four seasons, coaching the Tigers catchers and outfielders, instructing the hitters, and coaching third base.

Much as he had as a star player at Trinity from 2013-16, Waters helped guide the Tigers to the NCAA Regional in each of his four seasons as a coach, reaching the Division III College World Series in 2022, thanks in large part to his recruiting efforts that landed the #3 recruiting class in 2019, the #10 class in 2020 and the #5 class in 2023 in the nation for DIII by Perfect Game. He also utilized the Transfer Portal to land 15 NCAA DI transfers between Trinity’s 2021-2023 recruiting classes.

On the field, the Tigers' offense slammed 147 home runs combined in 2019, 2021 and 2022 season. The 2022 World Series squad slashed .332/.446/.535 with 129 doubles, 16 triples, 67 home runs, and 82 stolen bases on 102 attempts. One of the leaders of that team, 1B/DH AJ Metz, a member of Waters’ 2019 recruiting class, when on to slam 17 homers for Duke the following year and earn Most Outstanding Player Honors at the 2023 Conway Regional. Another recruit, Harrison Durrow, signed as a UDFA with the Brewers after the 2023 season, one of the few DIII players to sign after only three years of college experience.

As an undergraduate at Trinity, Waters hit .353 in 90 career games, including a .421 average as a senior as Trinity marched to the Division III national title.

He received a B.A. with a double major in Economics and Psychology from Trinity in 2016.

He began his coaching career at KIPP Houston High School in 2017, while working in private business and was a volunteer assistant coach at St. Thomas University in Houston in 2018.

In his free time, Waters enjoys sharing time with his fiancée, Lindsey, and their dog, Willow.
