Owls Host SMU in Turpin Cup on Senior Night

HOUSTON – The Rice men's tennis team will host SMU in the Turpin Cup on Senior Night at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
The Owls enter the weekend with a 13-6 overall record and a 4-1 mark at home. Rice is ranked No. 50 in the latest ITA team rankings. Last weekend, the Owls went 2-0 at home, defeating No. 72 Tulsa 4-0 and No. 64 Memphis 4-2.
Junior Petro Kuzmenok and Santiago Navarro are ranked No. 47 in doubles, while Kuzmenok is No. 54 in singles. Kuzmenok was also named the American Men's Tennis Player of the Week after posting a perfect 4-0 record last weekend.
Turpin Cup History
The Turpin Cup was established in 2020 to honor Jack Turpin, who earned All-America honors and a Southwest Conference doubles title at Rice in 1950. His oldest son, Scott, also played at Rice, while his younger sons, Mark and Jeff, were All-Americans at SMU.
Turpin, who was inducted into the Texas Tennis Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Rice Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013, passed away on Dec. 21, 2019. The traveling trophy honors his legacy and the Turpin family's impact on both programs.
Senior Night
Seniors Kabeer Kapasi, Santiago Navarro and Yair Sarouk will be recognized during a ceremony beginning at 4:50 p.m., with the match scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
