Owls Fall to No. 36 Wichita State

HOUSTON – The Rice women's tennis team fell to No. 36 Wichita State, 4-3, on Saturday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Despite a tight battle in doubles, the Shockers claimed the doubles point. Theodora Chantava and Kristina Kudryatseva defeated Divna Ratkovic and Ema Mravcova, 6-3, on court two. On court one, the No. 13-ranked doubles team of Giorgia Roselli and Zin Tong Wang topped Darya Schwartzman and Fernanda Martinez, 7-5. Uma Bakaityte and Daniela Chica trailed 6-5 on court three when play was halted.
The Owls responded quickly in singles to even the match. Francesca Maguina defeated Kudryatseva, 6-2, 6-3. Wichita State regained momentum when Bakaityte fell to Roselli, 6-4, 6-0.
Ratkovic answered for Rice, defeating No. 106 Chantava, 6-4, 6-4, on court three to tie the match again. No. 124 Wang then edged Schwartzman in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, to give the Shockers the advantage.
Martinez kept Rice in the match, earning a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 win over Tatyana Nikolenko on court six. The match came down to court five, where Selvaraj dropped a three-set decision to Vichitraporn Vimuktananda, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Rice returns to action March 14 against Charlotte in New Orleans.
