HUNTSVILLE — The Rice women's tennis team defeated Sam Houston, 6-1, on Saturday at the Chuck & Wanda Beckner Tennis Center.
Rice secured its sixth doubles point of the season and improved to 7-3 overall. On Court 2, Ema Mravcova and Divna Ratkovic defeated Ana Kurtsikashvili and Sara Sadainovic, 6-1. Darya Schwartzman and Fernanda Martinez clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Christine Jevicky and Nayuma Subba on Court 1. On Court 3, Nithesa Selvaraj and Daniela Chica led 5-4 when play was halted.
Ratkovic earned the first singles point for the Owls with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kurtsikashvili. Martinez followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Ella Fitcher. Mravocova secured her first match-clinching point of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Play continued after the clinch, with Selvaraj defeating Sadainovic, 6-1, 6-4. Schwartzman fell on Court 1, 6-1, 6-2. The Owls closed the day with Francesca Maguina's 7-6, 6-1 win over Jevicky.
Rice returns home to host Louisiana on Saturday, March 7, and Wichita State on Sunday, March 8.
