FAYETTEVILLE – The Rice women's track and field team set a pair of school records during a tremendous weekend at the Tyson Invitational and the Howie Ryan Invitational.
Julia Johannesdottir broke the first record for Rice, surpassing Andrea Blackett's 60m hurdles mark of 8.28s set in 1997 with a time of 8.25s. Blackett was part of Rice's NCAA champion 4x400m relay team in 1997.
Johannesdottir's mark also set an Icelandic national record.
Barbora Malíková later set a second record on the day, breaking Allison Beckford's 400m record of 52.16 set in 2002, with a time of 51.84s. Beckford's time was the national championship-clinching time in 2002.
In addition to breaking the school record, Malikova also broke the American Conference's 400m record.
Josie Taylor had a strong showing, tying a season high with a clearance of 1.75m in the high jump, while Alice Taylor was right behind with a 1.70m clearance.
Post Meet Reaction - Head Coach Jim Bevan
"What a weekend. We had many outstanding efforts. Barbora continued to impress and this weekend broke the school record in the 400m, a national championship-winning time set in 2002. We also had a second record broken, as Julia Johannesdottir broke a 29-year-old school and Icelandic national record in the 60 hurdles. All in all, lots of season and personal bests this weekend. Arayna Mickles had a great indoor 400m yesterday. Susie Nestor and Cullen Merrell had fantastic races. Josie Taylor finished third out of the collegiate competitors in the high jump. Saniya also had another great run in the 60m. We also ran the fastest 4x400 in 15 years. I am so excited to get some more pieces back in the coming weeks as we prepare for the American Conference Indoor Championship in Birmingham."
