Rice Drops Match to No. 3 Stanford at ITA Kickoff Weekend

STANFORD, Calif. — The Rice men's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 3 Stanford on Saturday at ITA Kickoff Weekend.
The Owls opened the match strong in doubles as Kabeer Kapasi and Yair Sarouk picked up a 6-3 win on court two over Samir Banerjee and Alex Razeghi. Stanford responded with a 6-3 victory by Mark Krupkin and Jagger Leach over Joshua Mandelbaum and Gabriel Porras on court three, before Alex Chang and Hudson Rivera edged Petro Kuzmenok and Santiago Navarro 7-5 to clinch the doubles point.
In singles play, Stanford secured the first singles point when Jagger Leach defeated Noey Do 6-0, 6-1 on court five. Razeghi followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Porras on court four to extend the lead, and Chang secured the match with a 6-1, 7-6 victory against Navarro on court six.
Several matches were still competitive when play was halted. Kuzmenok trailed Rivera 6-7, 2-2 on court one, whileKapasi was down 3-6, 5-6 against Rivera on court two. Sarouk pushed his match to three sets and held a 2-0 lead in the third after splitting the opening sets 6-4, 1-6 against Krupkin on court three.
Rice returns to action Jan. 31 in Beaumont, Texas, where the Owls will face Lamar and Lubbock Christian in their first doubleheader of the season.
