LAFAYETTE – After allowing a game-tying goal midway through the second half, the Rice soccer team prevailed off another clutch goal by Leah Chancey in the closing minutes for a 2-1 win over the Ragin' Cajuns in Lafayette. The Owls move to 4-1 on the season, while Louisiana falls to 3-2.
How It Happened
It wasn't long before the Owls got the offense rolling, with Lauren Pickup netting the game's opening goal off a pass from Chancey. Minutes later, Pickup had another great look, but this time Louisiana's keeper was there for the save. The Owls looked like they doubled their lead with minutes left in the half, but the goal was wiped off after a foul was determined on the play. Rice led Louisiana 1-0 at the break.
The Owls had several chances to tack on another run in the early stages of the second half, but shots from Chancey and Mariana Elizondo were saved by the goalie. The Ragin' Cajuns evened the score just shy of the 67-minute mark. With almost five minutes to go, Pickup found Chancey who fired the ball to the back of the next to give the Owls a 2-1 road win.
Post-Match Reaction: Head Coach Brian Lee
"Since Thursday we have talked about how hard Sunday matches on the road against good team are, and how they can make good seasons great. With 15 minutes left we had a decision to make, and we went to work like a boxer. Train the brain and aim to outfox ya. Like a punch, our team rocks ya, sometimes it knocks you so hard it stops ya dead in your tracks. So power packed, before you can react, you're flat on your back. We went to work."
