
Owls Set for NCAA Championships

EUGENE – The Rice men's and women's track and field teams will kick off the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships today in Eugene, Oregon, with the four-day meet starting with the men's competition on June 11.
Representing Rice will be Alice Taylor (high jump) and Mckyla Van der Westhuizen (javelin) on the women's side and Jack Greaves (javelin) for the men.
Last year's third-place finisher at the NCAA Championship meet, Van der Westhuizen was third at the NCAA West Prelims with a throw of 57.17m. Van der Westhuizen ranks third in the NCAA for the event and is coming off her second consecutive conference title in the javelin.
Another NCAA Championships qualifier from last season, Taylor returns after finishing ninth in Eugene a year ago. Taylor finished ninth at prelims with a clearance of 1.81m and was fourth at the conference meet. She enters the NCAA meet ranked 21st.
Looking to cap off his freshman season in a huge way, Greaves enters the championship meet after finishing seventh at prelims with a throw of 72.17m. Greaves finished seventh at the AAC Championships and ranks 19th in the NCAA.
Van der Westhuizen and Greaves will have three throws for their flight, with the top nine advancing to the finals.
