Rice carries a 16-9 record into the match after winning its previous four matches, included three-straight against top-65 teams in the ITA's rankings, including the then-23rd-ranked USF Bulls in the AAC Semifinals. The Owls would then win the following match against tournament host Memphis to win its first conference title since 2017 and earn the American's automatic bid to the tournament.
Texas A&M is 16-10 on the year, falling in the SEC Quarterfinals against Tennessee in the team's first match in the tournament. The Aggies and Owls met earlier in the regular season, with the Aggies winning all of the singles courts after Rice took the doubles point.
This is the second-straight postseason the Owls and Aggies have met to open the NCAA Tournament. Texas A&M won last season's first round match in College Station, 4-0.
The winner of Saturday's match will take on the winner of second-seeded Baylor vs. third-seeded Nebraska in Sunday's regional championship match.
