Men's Tennis Falls to Texas A&M in NCAA Tournament First Round

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The fourth-seeded Rice Owls fell 4-2 to the top-seeded Texas A&M Aggies in the College Station Regional on Saturday afternoon at the Mitchell Tennis Center. The Owls finish the season with a 16-10 record while the Aggies will advance to take on Baylor in the regional final.
The match kicked off with the doubles portion, which was a back-and-forth affair between the two teams. Neither side was able to separate from the other until towards the end, where Rice started to take control of doubles. Tommy Czaplinski and Eduardo Morais on the third line claimed the first doubles court with a 6-4 victory, with Kabeer Kapasi and Arthus de la Bassetiere earning a 6-4 win of their own on the second line quickly after the first win to claim the doubles point against the Aggies. Santiago Navarro and Petro Kuzmenok led 6-5 on the first court when doubles were called.
The Aggies struck first in singles to tie the match with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at the sixth court, evening the score at 1-1. Czaplinski would earn Rice's second point of the day on court four with a 6-4, 6-2 win to briefly take another lead over the Texas A&M, but the Aggies would respond with a 6-2, 6-1 win on one to even the score again.
The Aggies would take court three, 6-3, 7-5, to take a 3-2 lead in the match, bringing it down to courts two and five. Kuzmenok and his opponent battled on two to a third-set tiebreaker, but the Aggie player on court five would take that match with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 result to advance Texas A&M in the NCAA tournament.
