HOUSTON – Rice men's tennis went undefeated to open the 68th Ralph O'Connor Rice Invitational going 8-0 on Friday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Andrew Li and Tommy Czaplinski led the Owls in Draw A, opening with a 6-2 doubles victory over Andres Delgadillo and Dani Lopez of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Rice followed with two straight-set singles wins, as Czaplinski defeated Delgadillo 6-1, 6-2 and Li topped Lopez 6-1, 6-0.
In Draw B, Noey Do and Gabriel Porras earned a 7-5 doubles victory over Loic Young and Miguel Bellorio of UTRGV. Both Owls followed with singles wins, with Porras defeating Young 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 and Do topping Bellorio 6-3, 6-3.
Francisco Salmain teamed with Kriish Tyagi of Texas A&M to secure a 7-5 doubles win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Jami Salvolainen and Mikel Garmendia. Salmain added a singles victory over Garmendia, winning 7-6, 6-3.
All three teams advanced in the main draw and will continue competition Saturday. Li and Czaplinski are scheduled to face Abilene Christian's Luis Nakamine and Gus Tettamble at 9 a.m., while Do and Porras will take on Merse Deli and Grant Lothringer of Abilene Christian at 1 p.m.
In Draw B, Joshua Mandelbaum is scheduled to team with Tyagi in doubles, while Salmain will compete in singles for the Rice-Texas A&M pairing at 1 p.m.
