MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The 66th-ranked Rice men's tennis team fell in a tight 4-3 match to the 48th-ranked Memphis Tigers on Friday night at the Leftwich Tennis Center in Memphis, Tennessee. Rice falls to 10-8 while Memphis improves to 10-8.
Rice earned the doubles point with two dominant victories in the doubles competition. Arthus de la Bassetiere and Eduardo Morais finished their match first with a swift 6-0 victory, followed by Petro Kuzmenok and Santiago Navarro at the first court with a 6-1 victory to claim the doubles point. Kabeer Kapasi and Tommy Czaplinski were leading on the third court, 4-3, when doubles was called.
In singles action, Rice took a 2-0 lead with Czaplinski's victory on court four, a pair of 6-4 victories, and grew the lead to 3-0 with Emir Sendogan's 6-2, 6-4 win on court six. However, the Tigers began to turn the tide, beginning with a 7-5, 6-3 victory on court one to cut the lead to 3-1. Court five earned a three set victory, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, and court two earned a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 victory to tie the match up at 3-3. Memphis' competitor on court three would win a third set tiebreaker to claim the fourth point of the match, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6.
Rice returns to action on Friday, March 28, to take on Tulane from the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
