STILLWATER, Okla. - The 66th-ranked Rice men's tennis team fell 5-2 to the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Tuesday evening in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Rice falls to 10-7 while the Cowboys improve to 7-8.
Rice got off on the right foot to start doubles as Arthus de la Bassetiere and Eduardo Morais took the match at the second court, 6-2, to take an early advantage in doubles play. However, the Cowboys would earn victories on courts three and one to take a 1-0 advantage into the singles portion of the match.
The Pokes earned two quick points to take a 3-0 lead after earning victories at the third and second courts, but de la Bassetiere got the Owls on the board with an upset victory over the 87th-ranked competitor in the land with a 7-6 (2), 6-4 victory at the first line. Kabeer Kapasi narrowed the gap at 3-2 with a victory at the fifth line, earning a three-set victory (6-4, 3-6, 6-3). However, the Pokes would claim the match with a victory on the fourth line, then earn its fifth point with a three-set win at the sixth line to cement the 5-2 victory over the Owls.
Rice will be back in action on Friday, March 21, taking part in a doubleheader against Memphis with the Rice women's tennis team.
