No. 62 Rice Drops Match to No. 23 Pepperdine on Thursday

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 62nd-ranked Rice Owls all 4-1 to the 23rd-ranked Pepperdine Waves on Thursday afternoon at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club in La Jolla, California. Pepperdine improves to 7-5 on the season while Rice falls to 7-4.
Action began with the doubles portion of the match, where the brothers of Edward Winter and Hugh Winter earned the first doubles at the first court, taking down Santiago Navarro and Petro Kuzmenok by a score of 6-3. On the third line, Arthus de la Bassetiere and Eduardo Morais evened up the doubles portion with a 6-3 victory, bringing it all down to the second court. With the match tied at 6-6, the 67th-ranked duo of Maxi Homberg and Linus Carlsson Halldin took down Kabeer Kapasi and Yair Sarouk, 7-6 (3), to claim the doubles point.
To begin singles play, #76 Winter took down de la Bassetiere at the first line to make it 2-0 for Pepperdine. Poertner would go on to make it 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Tommy Czaplinski on the fifth court. Kapasi got the Owls on the board with a three-set victory at the sixth line, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. The Waves, however, clinched the match with a victory by 53rd-ranked Homberg at the second line, 7-6 (3), 6-3, to close the match. Navarro and Carlsson Halldin were tied 1-1 in their third set, while Emir Sendogan and Pisaric were tied 5-5 in their second set.
For the remainder of the week, several Owls will take part in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship. Rice will take on Texas A&M - Corpus Christi in its next dual match, facing the Islanders on Thursday, March 6, at 11 a.m. from the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
