
Late Run Sinks Rice at No. 18 Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis closed the game on a 14-2 run over the final 3:52, as Rice fell to the 18th-ranked Tigers, 84-72, Wednesday night from FedExForum.
The Story
Rice missed its first five shots, as Memphis jumped out to a 13-3 lead in the first 4:10. The teams traded baskets over the next 3:31. But the Tigers scored six of the next nine points, taking a 21-9 lead, their largest of the half. But the Owls started to get into a groove. Denver Anglin hit back-to-back three-pointers, sending the Owls on a 12-2 run to cut the deficit to 23-21 with 8:04 to play in the half, forcing a Memphis timeout. But UM scored seven of eight points out of the timeout. Anglin made two free throws, and after a Memphis basket, hit his third three of the half. The Tigers then scored six of eight points. Kellen Amos made one-of-two free throws and Caden Powell made a jumper. But PJ Haggerty made one-of-two from the line as Rice went into halftime trailing, 39-32.
After missing its first three shots to start the second half, Jacob Dar hit a three as Rice made four straight, capped by Andrew Akuchie's three-point play to bring the Owls within 44-42 four minutes in. After a Memphis basket, Powell scored four straight, including a dunk that tied the game at 46. But the Tigers answered with six straight to take a 52-46 lead. The teams then went back-and-forth over the next minute. Dain Dainja scored three straight for UM, but Kellen Amos made a layup and Alem Huseinovic drilled a three to pull Rice within 59-57 with 9:23 to go. After trading buckets, Dainja made a layup and Haggerty hit two free throws to give Memphis a six-point lead. But the Owls answered with six straight, including a dunk from Powell that tied the game at 70 with 3:52 remaining. After Tyrese Hunter gave Memphis the lead, Powell was fouled. But he missed the first free throw of a one-and-one, and Haggerty drove in for a layup. Kellen Amos' three was blocked, and Memphis took it the other way for a layup. Rice had two chances at a layup, but they were both blocked, Dainja was hit underneath for a dunk. Trae Broadnax then turned the ball over, and Rice was forced to foul. But the Tigers made their free throws, clinching the win.

Rice was held to 41.4% (24-of-58) from the field, and 23.8% (5-of-21) from three, but was 19-of-24 (79.2%) from the free throw line. Memphis connected on 49.2% (32-of-65) from the floor, 15.4% (2-of-13) from three, and 78.3% (18-of-23) from the free throw line. Rice was outrebounded, 40-to-29, and was outscored in the paint, 54-to-32.
