#63 Rice Earns Shutout Victory Over FAU, 4-0

HOUSTON - The 63rd-ranked Rice Owls earned a hard-fought 4-0 victory over the Florida Atlantic Owls on Thursday afternoon at the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center. Rice improved to 7-3 while FAU fell to 1-7.
Action began with doubles play, where a reconfigured lineup for Rice emerged. The first line duo of Petro Kuzmenok and Santiago Navarro earned a 6-1 victory, followed quickly by the second line duo of Kabeer Kapasi and Yair Sarouk, earning the doubles point for Rice with a 6-2 win. The duo on court three, Eduardo Morais and Arthus de la Bassetiere, trailed in their match, 3-4, when the doubles portion of the match was called.
In singles play, Petro Kuzmenok was the only Owl to win his match in two sets. The sophomore took down his opponent in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5. The next Rice Owl to take down his opponent was Emir Sendogan at the fourth line, earning a 6-1, 7-6 win with a 7-4 tiebreaker. Tommy Czaplinski earned a the fourth point and solidified the Rice win at the third line with a three-set victory, winning 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 in his match.
Arthus de la Bassetiere was pushing his opponent to the brink with his match, trailing 4-5 in the third set after winning his first 7-5 before falling 2-6 in his second. Kabeer Kapasi and Yair Sarouk were just beginning their matches with only four courts available before the match was called.
Rice will return to action next week on Thursday, February 27, as the Owls head west to take on #21 Pepperdine before taking part in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship for the rest of the weekend.
