Rice Knocks Off Lamar, 6-1

HOUSTON - Rice men's tennis took down the Lamar Cardinals, 6-1, on Friday night at the George R. Brown Tennis Center. Rice improves to 5-3 while Lamar drops to 5-4 on the year.
The match opened with doubles play, where the new duo of Kabeer Kapasi and Joshua Mandelbaum earned a 6-4 victory at the second line to claim the first doubles win. Arthus de la Bassetiere and Tommy Czaplinski earned the doubles point at the first line with a 6-3 victory, setting Rice up with an early 1-0 lead. At the third line, Yair Sarouk and Eduardo Morais were tied 4-4 with their opponents before their match was abandoned.
Morais at the sixth court was the first to finish in singles, taking a 6-2, 6-2 decision to put Rice up 2-0. Lamar was able to get on the board with a victory at the first court, but Rice immediately put some distance between the two with a Yair Sarouk victory at the fifth court, 6-2, 6-4. Kapasi clinched the victory at court four with a 7-6, 6-2 win.
The two continued play with Rice earning the remaining points, starting with Czaplinski at court three, 6-4, 7-6 (3). Emir Sendogan closed the match with a three set (4-6, 6-3, 6-0) victory to earn Rice a 6-1 victory.
Rice will return to action on Sunday morning from the George R. Brown Tennis Center, hosting the Texas Tech Red Raiders for an early match.
